Professional Looks

Behavioral Science Conference at UAA was held on Saturday. It was so much fun and such a success! I didn’t trip over my high heels, forgot what I was supposed to say, and most importantly, the computer worked perfectly. Usually the Murphy’s Law finds me at times when I am doing public presentations. But not this time.

I was talking about two research projects of mine. One concentrating on social rewards in context of alcohol use by using animal models, i.e., hamsters that have been video famous also on my blog: videos can be seen here, and here.

The other research is in the field of trauma psychology where I was studying parental communication styles when talking about disturbing events to 3-9-year-old children. And this study showed that adults, either parents or non-parents, don’t think about child’s age and developmental level when discussing about traumatic events such as terrorist attack, death, or natural disaster with them. So research to be continued ….

Overall, it was a great day to talk to larger audience. I really do miss the days when I was teaching at the university, and hopefully one day I am back at the professor’s podium again.

And the high heels: here is a picture of my professional outlook for the conference…. yes, there are days when I am not wearing jeans and t-shirt or a sweater.

Wordless Wednesday

Exciting times in near future…

Spring Is Coming

After a long, snowy winter, the sunshine and warmer temperatures have finally found The Last Frontier: the past few days we have enjoyed the bird blue skies and sunny days. Snow is slowly melting, birds are chirping, people are getting out and about. Hibernation is over.

I started to have a spring fever this weekend in the form of spring cleaning and home decorations. If I just could have a few more extra hours in my day, I might even get all my creative crafts done. I started with some sewing projects: colorful, spring-themed table runners, placemats and potholders. And by matting and framing some of my own artwork. Thanks to bright sunshine though, it looks like cleaning the windows, dusting here and there, cleaning the carpet need to be added to the list too…  But it is not all about the cleaning, organizing and trying to be Holly Homemaker. Sometimes it is good to kick back, and just enjoy the life with great friends.
A while ago I wrote a blog posting about Alaska and Ft Richardson as a duty station at Handling With The Grace, and mentioned how it can be pretty tough to make friends with locals in Alaska – and I am still standing behind my words on that one. However, I feel very blessed to have some most awesome friends in our Alaska based military community.

On Saturday Connie and I headed to little town of Girdwood, which is also the home of Alyeska, the only ski resort we have in Anchorage vicinity. We did not hit the slopes this time but had culinary excursion to famous Double Musky Inn. Double Musky is a Cajun type restaurant with an awesome, excellent wine collection and delicious meals. After king crab legs, shrimp, and sinfully delicious unhealthy Double Musky pie we were stuffed! It was so very relaxing to spend an afternoon with a great friend, enjoy the road trip in the sunshine, and spot some mountain goats.

Sunday was time for outdoors activities. Tassu and I headed out to the Eagle River Nature Center with Florence and her furry kid, Roxy. What a gorgeous, sunny day it was. And so much fun! Roxy and Tassu had a blast, they were sniffing and running around – and naturally passed out as soon as they got into the car. Water-loving Roxy even decided that it is a good idea to swim in freezing cold river water. Silly puppy! She actually caused us some additional excitement by having a bit hard time to get out of the water due to the ice. Luckily she was able to make it herself although I was already thinking of scenarios how to get the dog up on thin ice if she needed help…. yeah, I would have dipped into the ice-cold water too if she had needed help. We wouldn’t leave our battle buddies. And nothing is better after a hike than sitting at a coffee shop for a while, sipping lattes and talking about the life. I am very, very blessed to be able to call these wonderful ladies as my friends.

Knitting, and some crocheting

Lately I have re-founded my lost love. Knitting. I used the knit all the time a few years ago – anything from socks to Aran sweaters but then the life happened. With the full-time work&school I somehow just abandoned my knitting needles. Towards the end of last year I started to improve my time management even more by trying to get rid of all procrastination and getting things done when it is the time to get them done.

Thanks to the improved time management, I seem to have way more hours in my day. Which then equals to time to do things, and enjoy the life. No more running from one place to another like a chicken whose head is chopped off. Or wrapping up research papers at the very last minute.

So I have been knitting scarves…. tons of them. I fell in love with the headbands – all sizes, shapes, colors. And headbands caused a problem. Decorating them with a crocheted flower. Crocheted flower. Awesome. I haven’t had any clue about crocheting at all. I know how to hold the hook, kinda, and different crochet stitches are not that much of a nightmare. But reading crochet patterns. Oh boy! As a knitter, everything I do has to go into another stitch – I can knit or purl one stitch several times. Making double crochets into a ring, however, threw me off. Until I met The Happy Hooker.

On our trip to Chicago over the holidays, I found a knitting store, Loopy Yarns, just outside the Loop. The ladies at the store recommended me to take a look at The Happy Hooker book, and voilà – the crochet knot started to open. Since the holidays, I have crocheted quite a few flowers. Well, right now, too many. I have no clue what to do with them all….. and look forward to starting to work on some hats.

This newfound love for knitting and interest in crocheting is leading to a practical problem though. Little accessories like scarves and headbands get done so very quickly that I have no clue what to do with all these knitted items. Looks like friends and relatives will receive some handmade products as presents ….

Knitting has also taken me to another addiction…. Have you heard about Ravelry? Such a great online stop for people who like to knit or crochet…. if you are there, feel free to friend me. If you haven’t stopped by at Ravelry yet, check it out. You might get addicted!

Miles Behind Me

If you are a runner, you know what I am talking about. Running is a passion. It makes me to lace up my shoes regardless the weather. Rain or shine, I run. And run some more.

“If the miles behind me could be put into words before you…
you would feel my efforts, my struggles, my desires,
most of all you would see my joy…
Watch me from afar run the trails and hills
and miles upon miles and you will see…”
- an unknown runner

It has been snowy and cold in Alaska lately. Last week we had subzero temperatures, well, negative ten. Then came the snow. A foot of it. And consequently some extra workout in the form of shoveling. Now the coldness is back. But nothing prevents me from running. Nothing makes me feel more alive than hitting the road or trail, and knocking the miles down.

As you can guess, winter running on the Last Frontier sometimes requires dressing up a bit more. The complete Ninja look with long johns, hats and balaclavas does the trick though, and keeps me warm even on those colder than cold mornings.
