Travel Update: Memorial Day Weekend ’12

Finally it is online! The travel story of our Kennecott Mine adventures over the Memorial Day weekend 2012, you can read it here!

MilSpouse (first) Friday Fill-In #71

It’s time for a new MilSpouse Friday Fill-In! And it is May. Up here in Alaska it looks and feels like summer is making its way to north. Even though we saw a few random snowflakes yesterday…. just random ones though! But let’s take a look at the past month by answering the questions that have been put together once again by Wife of A Sailor.

1. What’s one thing in the past month you would have changed? April was a great month but I would have greatly appreciated it not flying by super fast. Or maybe I would have needed a few extra hours here and there. April was the month of deadlines, papers and exams. On top of regular business travels in and out of Alaska. Hopefully May is slightly less hectic.

2. What was your favorite thing that happened in April? Melting snow!!! We had a super snowy winter this year, and we broke the snow record from 1955 here in Anchorage area. While shoveling snow is a superb workout, I am glad we are finally free of snow for a few couple months.

3. What are your plans for Memorial Day? Adventures, of course! Jason, Tassu and I are heading out to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park for Memorial Day weekend. Wrangell-St Elias is one of the largest national parks, bigger than the country of Switzerland. It is rather primitive area but a perfect spot for exciting adventures. We are thinking of taking a bush plane flight into the middle of nowhere, and do some backpacking and whatnot. Also, knowing my hubby, I am pretty sure some excursions around Kennicott Mine will be on our agenda.

4. Have you ever traveled Space A? If yes, where… if no, would you ever try it? Yep, just a short flight in L48. And look forward to doing some more! Too bad that full-time work limits my adventure opportunities. If I ever find myself in a position where I am free to hop onboard whenever I feel like it, I would be taking way more advantage of it.

5. What are you looking forward to in May? University commencement ceremony is this Sunday – how exciting! I am also looking forward to our trip to Mile-High City aka Denver and its vicinity in a couple of weeks, as well as the Memorial Day weekend adventures. And I already have some pretty neat business trips lined up for May too. Looks like another busy month in front of us…

Cheers to 2011! Welcome 2012!

Less than seven hours left of year 2011 here in Alaska. When looking back this year, I can only wonder how fast the time can fly by. 2011 has been a wonderful year with full of extraordinary events. We lived an adventurous life – skied, snowboarded, went halibut fishing… We traveled, had fun, were busier than beavers with our careers, tied the knot, … what else could one ask for one year?

Back in March we got engaged – Jason popped the question under the starry Hawaiian skies. Maui will always have a special meaning in my heart. Fast-forwarding to July, we said I Do’s at Fort Richardson chapel in Alaska.

Besides traveling to Maui in March, we were honeymooning on O’ahu in September, checked out San Francisco in May, and San Diego in September. And then in Chicago area in December. And in the middle of all this, I have been jet setting all over Alaska from Barrow to southeastern tips of this giant state – spending time on the plane nearly every week.

Work-wise … well, I don’t even know how we have been managed to juggle with all the tasks we both have. Maybe the love for our duties is what keeps us going. Jason has been busy with his new unit – being in charge of the troops and running the daily stuff make his days constantly longer, and sometimes weekends shorter. Despite all the travels, I couldn’t be happier with my daily job. I am working with the best people people ever who are motivating and supporting – always thriving the excellence. One of my life-long dreams came true just a couple of months ago when KominiakPhoto opened an online Fine Art Gallery. The gallery is one of the 2012 Projects that I am hoping to concentrate more.

It has been such a busy but awesome, wonderful 2011. The bar is set very high for 2012, and I can’t wait to see what the new adventures will be.

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day” –Edith Lovejoy Pierce

So the opportunities …. I do have some goals and plans for the New Year – stop by tomorrow, January 1, to read about Top 5 goals for 2012!

Meanwhile, here is a review of 2011 New Year’s Resolutions, last years goals worked out pretty good.

Resolution 1: Cherish every day. I think I have done pretty good job at that.

Resolution 2: Dedicate more time for the photography. Fine Art gallery is up and running – can check this one off too!

Resolution 3: Keep up with the school stuff, maintaining the existing GPA. Straight A’s the whole year of 2011!

Resolution 4: Run a full marathon in 2011. While I have been running 20+ miles runs, I didn’t do any long-distance running races in 2011. Mainly because Alaska is not the best location for running, and a couple of marathons I had on my mind were overlapping with some of our travels. So mileage done, races not. 2011 is a new year!

Resolution 5: Add a short yoga practice to be a part of my daily workouts. Got it covered – I am doing yoga practices nearly every day, and my flexibility has gotten so much better.

Holiday Adventures

Christmas flew by, way too fast.

Jason and I had such a great time in Chicago and Valparaiso: sightseeing, shopping and hanging out with the family. I definitely do have the most awesome in-laws in the world. Jason’s Mom and Dad arranged another unforgettable, lovely Christmas – delicious food, and house full of family members. Good times, lots of fun, laughter and happy moments.

And it all was over way too soon. Why can’t we celebrate Christmas at least for a week?!?

Before heading to Jason’s parents, we spent a day and half Chicago by doing some photography and Christmas shopping. It’s always such a treat to escape Alaska and see some city life. I was in heaven at Macy’s and Nordstrom’s, enjoyed the dinner at Macy’s Walnut Room in Chicago…. Although I love the outdoors and active lifestyle, climbing mountains and camping in the woods for weeks, I can’t deny the desire for finer things in life. I never considered myself as a city girl – until I moved to Alaska. If you have never been to Alaska, it’s hard to imagine what the life at the Last Frontier can be…. Nordstrom’s in Anchorage has a shoe department smaller than a stamp, and cosmetics section’s back wall is completely under construction. The whole store is smaller than one floor at Marshall Field’s Macy’s. Do I ever find anything there? Not really. Online shopping is a girl’s best friend in Alaska.

but back to our Christmas adventures.

Our dinner before Christmas at Macy’s Walnut Room turned out to be a true success. Last year Jason’s Mom and us tried to eat there but wait for the table was like forever and a day. This year Jason and I headed to Macy’s right after arriving at Palmer House, and were able to get a table at 19:30 seating. Our table was right next to the tree – any closer, and we would have been on the tree. The dinner was a real treat, and very, very inexpensive.

My shopping highlight was a new yarn store, Loopy Yarns, at the outskirts of the Loop. What a lovely store with top notch service and a great selection of yarns. I have picked up my beloved knitting hobby again, and did some great findings there. In addition to picking up a crochet book, Happy Hooker. Thanks to the book, I finally managed to crochet my first flower.
The yarn adventures continued in Valparaiso. Jason’s Mom took us to a new knitting store in town, Sheep’s Clothing, and I found more patterns and yarns. This little town store was such a treat and wonderful surprise with a great selection of k tiring supplies. One day I’d love to own a little tar store like that. Teach knitting, socialize, sell yarn and encourage people’s creativity! Maybe when I retire…

More about our Holiday adventures to follow…. Stay tuned.
