MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #60 (and #59)

This week’s MilSpouse will be a double-post since I missed last week while enjoying the sunshine and wonderful weather in Hawaii with the hubby. We finally had our honeymoon, had a great time and pictures to follow …. as soon as I get that far. Before that I have to get done with a couple of midterms this Friday. Meanwhile, enjoy the answer to questions put together by always awesome  Wife of A Sailor!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #60

1. I always feel like I’m 25  years old, but in reality, I’m a bit over 30 – uh-oh .
I tend to think that people as old as they make themselves to be. Even though I am already a bit over 30, I still have that craziness and innocence of a 25-year old.

2. I wish my family understood better when I tell them about the military life.

3. If you saw me when I am shopping pink lifting gloves , you’d think I was a total girly-girl, but if you saw me when I dead lift 325 lbs at the gym , you’d think I was a tomboy through-and-through.
Yep, I do wear pink lifting gloves and kick boys’ butts.

4. I feel like I’m in a totally different universe when I go to the university and see all the freshmen.
Sometimes I feel myself old ….

5. In honor of this being MFF #60… 60 months ago (exactly 5 years ago, so September 30, 2006) I lived in Seattle, WA, and my life was totally different because I worked for Nokia, lived a city girl’s single life and had just moved into a new home .
Five years ago I didn’t see myself living in Alaska, being married to an awesome man, working in another company, or looking towards the PhD degree. I was so set to be at Nokia forever, and dedicate my life for the company, like I had done since 1998. But it all started to change in 2009….

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #59

1. My favorite thing that happened this week was the honeymoon in Hawaii.
We had absolutely awesome time on O’ahu, and I can’t wait to go back again.

2. Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll … actually I wouldn’t pick it up.

3. Autumn is officially here and my favorite part of the season is awesome fall colors that are great subject for photographs.

4. One of the things I’d like to do before winter arrives is to do some more hiking without drowning in the snow.
While I do like winter and slightly wait for the snowboarding season, I am not too excited about being surrounded by the snow ….

5. I would be willing to participate in MilSpouse Secret Santa. (sorry folks, just trying to get an idea here on how many would participate)
I did it last year, and look forward to this year as well!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #56

September. Already. It has been such a busy week, and I am almost dreading next week when I am practically flying from one place to another. We are heading to sunny California for the Labor Day weekend, then return home just to grab another suitcase and sleep for a few hours before being on the plane again.

The university started this week too. So far so good – I am greatly enjoying my research and lab classes. The only hiccup is a textbook on one of the online classes. The eBook should be available online but accessing it has turned out to be a serious headache. Hopefully teaching assistant and professor figure out what to do sometime in near future…

But now it is time for every Friday tradition — MilSpouse Friday Fill-In by Wife of A Sailor!

1. My plans for this weekend include traveling to San Diego, but what I’d really like to do is nothing else – this was our Labor Day weekend plan!

2. I consider the Labor Day holiday as start of fall. It actually has felt like fall in Alaska already for a little while.

3. My favorite meal for cookouts is anything healthy, but my friends or husband wouldn’t agree.

4. So far, my favorite part of summer has been our wedding! It has been a great summer overall though!

5. When it comes to deployments, my philosophy is to them one at a time, day by day.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #54

Another busy week has flown by. I got back from lovely, hot Texas, stayed at home for the weekend, and then headed to the northernmost town of the United States – Barrow, AK. From Barrow back to Anchorage, and drowning in unread emails and being swamped with tons of meetings. Luckily I do love my job. And since another Friday is here, it also means new MilSpouse Friday Fill-In — provided by Wife of A Sailor!

1. My spouse and I rarely agree on  _________________, but always agree on _________________.

We don’t always agree on exercising. I love to work out all the time, and usually do so every day, most days twice a day while my husband prefers to do his PT, and leave it there. It’s still work-in-progress to get him hooked to CrossFit. And trust me, I am working on it!

We always agree on purchases and anything financial, travel destinations, and things to do.

2. If I could use one word to sum up the way I feel right now, it would be _________________.

Energized. And if I could add more words, they would be along the lines happy, motivated, dedicated…. that’s how I am – most of the time my glass is half full, and I find the sunny side on everything.

3. One of the things my spouse does that grosses me out is _________________.

There really is nothing that grosses me out at what my hubby does. He cleans after himself, knows how to do the laundry, … nope, he doesn’t have any gross habits.

4. My readers may think I’m crazy for doing this, but I really love (to) _________________.

… adventure sports and hardcore fitness. The adrenaline and excitement keep me going, and I love to push my limits as much as I can. So mountain climbing, backcountry skiing, triathlons — they all go to this “crazy” category, don’t they? I still do all that stuff despite frostbitten toes and fingers (I still have all 10 of both), fixing my broken fingers with the duct tape in the woods …  Or when I have muscles more than sore, I take ice baths, and do all the workouts again next day. Insane, I think. But I love it.

5. Frankly, my dear, I don’t  _________________.

Hmm, the only thing that comes to my mind in this one is the line from movie “Gone With The Wind” where Rhett Butler says the infamous words “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” to Scarlett O’Hara. Lovely movie, by the way!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #53

What a busy week it has been! I have been in Austin, TX, for  a week now – in some work related meetings. And have had so much fun. Sounds crazy but I truly enjoy the 100+F weather, and can’t think about anything better than heading out for a run early in the mornings. No matter how sweaty I might get. The warm (and sunny) weather definitely beats Alaskan grey and rainy days at any time. But let’s look at the MilSpouse Friday Fill-In questions – provided by Wife of A Sailor, as always.

1. The best thing my parents taught me to do when I was a child was _________________.

… always do my best. Regardless the end result, it was important to do my best, and everything else was taken care of by itself. I still believe in this although aim to succeed no matter what – sometimes it may mean doing more than my best.

2. However, one thing I wish they did differently was _________________.

… I hope I had been pushed even harder to catch my dreams. I learned at older age how important it is not to give up, ever. But be persistent beyond persistent. And since I have always been a good student with minimal effort, it was easy to succeed and do my best. However, in some cases it is important to over exceed the goals and expectations.

3. One thing I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t is _________________.

….I would love to climb K2. Maybe one day. And I can’t wait to do my first, full Ironman race. I am pretty sure it won’t be my last though …. working on this goal.

4. One thing I never thought I’d try but I have is _________________.

…hmm, I have always tried everything I have wanted to try. Well, I didn’t see myself doing a bungee jump but I did. Didn’t really enjoy it. I got more excitement from jumping perfectly fine, working airplanes.

5. If I could give my 16-year-old self one piece of advice I’d tell myself _________________.

Believe yourself and your dreams. Nothing is impossible as long as you stay focused and not give up.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #52

Yikes – it’s August! Up here in Alaska the weather has looked not-so-summer’ish for a couple of past day now. Hopefully it is just a temporary change – I sure am not ready for the fall yet. This week we have celebrated my husband’s birthday, and after all the challenges with UPS, his birthday present finally arrived on Wednesday. And ever since he and his brand new iPad2 have been inseparable. He already had the iPad 1 so it is not a brand new thing for him but of course new gadgets are always new gadgets.

But now to the Friday Questions that have been kindly provided by Wife of A Sailor. Instead of regular questions, this Friday the idea is to fill in the blanks.

1. Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and ___________________ he will make a great fishing buddy – more time together!

2. It is amazing what you can accomplish if ___________________ set your mind for something and decide to get things done.

3. If you can’t stand the heat ___________________ try living in Alaska over a winter!

4. What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to ___________________ who we are and what we have today.

5. Well behaved women seldom ___________________ can sit back, tell great stories and say ‘Woo Hoo, What A Ride”.

Question #5 truly reminds me about my favorite quote ever – the words that I try to live by.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand – strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!”
